Fuel Efficiency Pushes Some Dealers to Near-Record Sales



War jitters and high gasoline prices haven�t dampened the spirits of local car buyers, according to many San Diego dealerships.

In fact, dealers believe gas selling for more than $2 per gallon is driving sales of new gas-electric hybrids and other fuel-efficient models during the past few weeks.

At most lots, hybrids stay on the showroom floor a few days at most. Sales of regular energy-efficient models are up. The typical trade-in: a gas hog.

Exotic Newcastle Disease�s Spread Threatens the State�s Second Largest Egg Region



Exotic Newcastle disease has hammered San Diego County�s egg production � and it�s getting worse.

Some 455,000 egg-laying chickens and other birds have died from the disease locally or have been slaughtered to prevent its spread, said Eric Larson, executive director of the San Diego County Farm Bureau. That�s 10 percent of all the egg-producing birds in the county, a population Larson estimates between 4.3 million to 4.5 million. Statewide, the effects are also alarming.

Local French Firms Feeling Political Pinch



Bertrand Hug wants everyone to know he�s an American citizen. Hug, the high-profile San Diego restaurateur who was born and raised in France, gave up his French citizenship to become an American in 1977.

Even though Hug wears his patriotism on his sleeve, and the Bush family patronizes his restaurants, Hug has received at least seven hate calls. The callers lashed out at him because France opposes the United States going to war against Iraq.
